Best isopods for reptile and frog vivariums in India
In a bioactive vivarium, isopods and springtails eat waste, shed skin, leftover food and mould. Picking the right species for your animal’s setup makes the difference between a crew that thrives and one that disappears in a month.
Tropical, humid setups
For dart frogs, crested geckos, tree frogs and other humid tanks, choose species that love moisture:
- Dwarf White: tiny, fast-breeding and lives deep in the substrate, so it’s safe with almost any animal.
- Cubaris murina (Murina Orange, Murina Papaya, Glacier): colourful, hardy and perfect for warm, humid tanks.
- Temperate white springtails: the best mould control, and a snack for small frogs.
Drier setups
Leopard geckos, bearded dragons and other arid reptiles need a mostly dry tank, but your cleanup crew still needs one damp area. Keep a moist patch under a hide or in a corner, and choose hardier species:
- Powder Orange: tough, fast and handles warm Indian temperatures.
- Dairy Cow and Orange Dalmatian: larger, bold Porcellio that tolerate drier conditions well.
How many to add
For a small to medium vivarium, start with 15–20 isopods and one springtail culture. Add plenty of leaf litter and let them settle for a couple of weeks before adding your reptile or frog if you can. Some will be eaten by insect-eating pets, which is fine, but a good hiding layer lets the colony keep breeding.
Tips for success
- Always keep leaf litter on top. It’s food and shelter in one.
- Never let the whole tank dry out completely.
- Add a calcium source like cuttlebone or crushed eggshell.
